Lottery Online

Lottery Online is a new way for people to play their state’s lottery games without leaving the comfort of their home. Currently, most US states offer the chance to buy tickets for a variety of lottery games including the big jackpot games such as Powerball and Mega Millions. While many people still prefer to purchase their tickets at traditional stores, there are now a number of options for players to access these games via their smart phones and computers.

The first state to introduce an online lottery was Illinois, and since then more than a dozen other states have followed suit with iLottery offerings. These sites allow players to purchase individual tickets and manage subscriptions. They also provide access to a wide range of instant games, which are similar to casino-like online games. While opponents of online lottery websites have valid concerns about problem gambling and cannibalization, data suggests that the shift to digital lottery sales doesn’t have much impact on traditional ticket sales.

Despite these benefits, the move to online lottery purchases isn’t popular with all retailers. The Massachusetts Package Stores Association has launched lobbying efforts against the change, arguing that it would be another hit to brick-and-mortar shops. It’s not hard to see why: As more and more services move online, brick-and-mortar retailers are feeling the squeeze. This is especially true in the case of retail liquor stores, which are seeing their profits plummet as people buy beer and other drinks at home rather than at local pubs and restaurants.
